A different take of the ponds near my office
Recently I started a new challenge where each Friday I will photograph several ponds that are located near my office. Last Friday I went again to the ponds but I decided to try something different. Instead of searching for tiny creatures with my MP-E 65, I decided to use my 180L instead. In addition, I did not allow myself to use my MT-24EX but instead had to use ambient lighting.
Occasionally I like putting myself out of the comfort zone. I did afford myself a monopod – though if I try this again I will likely bring a tripod instead.
To be honest, I’m not sure if any of these shots truly ‘worked’. I did try some new things and I stayed away from my usual subjects – bugs. In the photo above, I liked the play of the flower on the lake. I tried intentionally to use a narrow depth of field, but I think an even narrower depth of field would help the shot more. I may play around with it in Photoshop some time.
The above shot is an example of one of the things I love most about the 180L. Unlike the MP-E 65, if I see an interesting non-macro shot I can still take it. In this case I liked the shapes created between the reeds and their reflections in the pond.
Many years ago, the ponds used to be an old mill and parts of it can still be seen on the site. Therefore I tried juxtaposing nature vs. industry in a few shots.
Again, I think the verdict is still out on many of these shots. I think some of them are interesting and I did try to pay attention to composition when taking them. If I were to pick favorites, I think they would be the reeds shot and the first moss picture above. I would be curious to hear your feedback on which shots worked for you and which didn’t.
