Some fly shots from the weekend
Two weeks ago I had the time to take a number of shots outside and had the chance to get two flies (OK, two of them are March flies). This one looks like it was laughing at me.
Actually the more I see flies up close, the more I want them to stay away from my food. Flies use their tongues to eat, meaning if they stay long enough on my food and I eat it that I am eating fly saliva – not a pleasant thought. Two other shots I took that day I was quite happy with.
This is a March fly that at the time wasn’t getting in on the action like the other March flies that day. I kind of like the diagonal line in the shot, though I agree that it would have been more interesting on a leaf or something a bit more colorful. Here’s one that I feel has a better background/foreground.
I really like the dramatic lighting in this shot. It may be a bit strong around the edges of the leaf – something that if I had a bit more skill in Photoshop I could remove, but in general I like this shot the most of the three. My wife wasn’t much for it, but she rarely is with insect shots. What do you think? Is this shot a winner or is it missing something?

The bottom shot is cool, but I prefer the top shot because I’m an ID obsessive. Disregard my opinion since you’re trying to take your work in a different direction.
(BTW: If I’m remembering correctly, the top fly is a female. Most male flies have very close set eyes, almost touching in the middle. The eyes of a female fly are farther apart.)
For an annoying animal, it seems to be truly cool looking when it is magnified.
