Happy Passover!
As some of you might know, this Saturday night began the Jewish holiday of Passover, also called Pesach. During this time the entire family gets together on the first two nights and holds a seder. This is a very long ritual dinner consisting of at least three hours of praying and reading and pretending to pray and pretending to read and lots of wine drinking such that those actually praying and reading don’t pay much attention to those who are pretending.
This is also the time of year that we eat things sweet and bitter, to remind us of both the good and the bad times. It is a celebration of freedom from being slaves in Egypt that is detailed in the Exodus – or if you are a bit lazy with reading in The Ten Commandments with Charlton Heston. This year, as with every year, we celebrated Pesach at my wife’s parents’ house, and of course my mother in law made sure that food was not scarce.
I think this shot could use some improvement in Photoshop, but this is the quick result. I am also looking forward to next year, when I hope to have a bevy of external flashes and Pocketwizards available, as this would have been the perfect playground. Here’s another shot showing the entire table.
Now before some of you start saying – “that’s nothing!” you have to keep in mind that this was the table before a single course was served. During the course of the meal five full courses were served, as well as numerous other small things similar to what is already on the table. Unfortunately, due to the fact that I am a freak of nature, I don’t eat most of this food, which has been a minor point of contention in the family. If you have ever seen the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding her family is very similar and not eating at my mother-in-law’s house is taken as an insult. Still, it was a fun family occasion as shown in these pictures I took of my nephews and father in law reading a prayer followed by Nelya and Eitan (who is more concerned with eating).
Finally, I am adding the obligatory baby picture that my wife asked that I include. This baby is four weeks old and still very tiny at only eight pounds.
